VENEERS

What are VENEERS?
Veneers are wafer-thin, shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance.

WHAT TYPES OF PROBLEMS DO DENTAL VENEERS FIX?
  1. Teeth that are discolored -- either because of root canal treatment; stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride or other causes; or the presence of large resin fillings that have discolored the tooth
  2. Teeth that are worn down
  3. Teeth that are chipped or broken
  4. Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped (for example, have craters or bulges in them)
  5. Teeth with gaps between them (to close the space between these teeth)

WHAT ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VENEERS?

COMPOSITE VENEERS (DIRECT VENEERS)
Composites are substantially more economic than the likes of porcelain veneers, and involve a far shorter treatment period. The treatment can usually be completed in a single the dentist does the veneers on your teeth directly, although it may be a longer appointment than normal. The downside is that the finish often isn't as good as you would get from porcelain veneers, and they aren't as resistant to staining and discoloration. Regular polishing can keep them looking great, and as long as your daily dental hygiene is good they should last a long time.

PORCELAIN VENEERS (INDIRECT VENEERS)
Porcelain veneers are usually the most expensive option, but the transformative effect they can have on a person's smile makes them well worth the investment. The treatment will involve multiple appointments, with the initial preparation work being done with your dentistend the creation of the veneers taking place at the dental laboratory. They are created specifically for your unique set of teeth and will be custom tailored to your individual tooth color and shape.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW LONG DO VENEERS LAST?
Veneers will last 10 or more years without chipping or breaking. If they are properly cared for they can last much longer. It is possible for veneers to have issues sooner if the teeth are not maintained. Professional cleanings every 3 months and yearly exams are highly recommended.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY VENEERS?
Brushing each day for 2 minutes, flossing daily, and wearing a bite guard at night is a great way to protect the veneers. Avoid eating very hard foods like almonds, or cracking shells with the front veneers.

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON REASON TO HAVE VENEERS REPLACED?
The porcelain of veneers is very strong and should not break under normal circumstances. If gum recession occurs the root of the tooth may become exposed. Patients may want new veneers to cover the roots.

DOES THE PROCESS HURT?
Typically patients are numb for the veneering process. There should be no pain during the procedure once numbness takes effect. With smaller cases (two or four veneers) there will be very little or no discomfort after the numbness subsides. Patients should expect some soreness of the gums and possibly the jaw in cases that involve 8 or more veneers. The soreness can be alleviated with over the counter medications.
